AI Search Publishing Research Note
Google's generative AI search guide was last updated July 10, 2026. It says SEO remains relevant because AI Overviews and AI Mode use the existing Search index, ranking, and quality systems.
The guide defines query fan-out as concurrent related searches used to retrieve relevant information for a broader question. A page can support one part of an answer without matching the original wording exactly.
Google recommends original, non-commodity, people-first content with useful first-hand experience, clear organization, high-quality media, and sound technical access. It warns against scaled pages created primarily to manipulate results.
The guide says Google does not require llms.txt, special AI markup, forced chunking, a separate AI writing style, inauthentic mentions, or special structured data. Structured data remains useful when it accurately describes visible content and supports an eligible Search feature.
Eligibility still requires an indexed page that can appear with a snippet. Crawling, canonicalization, JavaScript access, page experience, spam policies, and Search Console remain relevant.
Google announced dedicated generative AI performance reports in June 2026 for a limited subset of sites. The reports include impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates. Availability should be checked at publication.
Google's guidance does not establish how every answer engine selects sources. Cross-platform advice needs the official documentation for the named platform.
The Venture Step editorial model uses answer-first openings, primary evidence, stable entities, distinct page intents, diagrams, related episodes, and refresh dates because those choices help readers and create a clearer public record. They are not presented as guaranteed ranking factors.
