Apprenticeships, College, and Learning Technical Work on the Job
Apprenticeships and college solve different learning problems. An apprenticeship combines employment, an approved occupational standard, structured training, and assessment. College usually offers broader theory, academic progression, and a credential that is less tied to one employer.
Employer training and self-directed projects are separate routes again. They can develop real capability without meeting the legal or funding requirements of an apprenticeship.
The better route depends on the occupation, jurisdiction, learner, employer, evidence, cost, and desired next move.
“Learn on the job” is not one category
In Venture Step episode 109, Joshua Gould describes a career built through sales, operations, government contracting, technology change, and executive responsibility rather than college.
He argues that many midcareer workers will learn AI through work. That is plausible. The strongest part of his account is not that adults cannot return to school. They can. It is that technical fluency grows when a person must solve a real problem, receive feedback, and live with the result.
That can happen through four distinct routes.

Calling all workplace learning an apprenticeship weakens the distinction. Calling all non-degree learning informal ignores regulated occupational programs.
Current English apprenticeships have defined obligations
Rules differ across the United Kingdom and across countries. This section concerns England.
The current GOV.UK guide to taking on an apprentice says the apprentice must hold a relevant job, receive at least the applicable minimum wage, have an employment contract long enough to complete the program, and receive formal off-the-job training during paid time.
The guide currently states that at least 20 percent of normal working hours, capped at an average of six hours a week, must be used for off-the-job training. Part-time apprentices can participate, with duration adjusted to the working pattern.
The 2025 to 2026 funding rules apply to starts from August 1, 2025 through July 31, 2026. New rules apply to later starts. The exact standard, funding, assessment, and training requirement must be checked on the person's start date.
Even privately funded English apprenticeships must meet statutory structure. Current private-funding guidance requires alignment with an approved standard, off-the-job training, a minimum practical period, and independent end-point or equivalent assessment.
An employer cannot relabel ordinary work as an apprenticeship merely because a junior employee is learning.
Apprenticeships are strongest when the job contains the occupation
The workplace must provide enough real responsibility to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviors in the standard.
An apprentice assigned only support tickets may not gain the design, testing, deployment, communication, and security experience expected in a broader software occupation. A data apprentice who spends the year copying spreadsheets may not receive meaningful data practice.

The employer therefore contributes more than a vacancy and wage. It supplies work, supervision, protected learning time, access to tools, feedback, and opportunities to demonstrate the standard.
The provider supplies structured learning and coordinates the training plan. Assessment checks competence against the occupational requirement. The apprentice remains an employee doing productive work while learning.
College is not the opposite of practical work
College and university programs vary widely. Many include placements, laboratories, studios, capstones, research, employer projects, or degree apprenticeships. Some are highly theoretical. Some are explicitly occupational.
The durable advantages are breadth, a structured body of theory, time to examine foundations, and a credential recognized across many employers and future study routes.
For fast-changing technical work, theory can age more slowly than a tool-specific tutorial. Algorithms, systems, statistics, security principles, communication, and research methods can support several generations of products.
The common weakness is distance from operating constraints. A classroom project may not expose the learner to ambiguous stakeholders, legacy data, production incidents, access controls, or the duty to maintain a system after launch.
That weakness can be addressed through work placements, serious projects, open-source contribution, internships, and applied research. It is not inherent to every degree.
Employer training can move faster and travel less
An employer can create excellent technical development without running an apprenticeship.
A worker can receive protected learning time, a mentor, increasingly difficult production tasks, reviews, and external courses. The program can adapt quickly to the company's systems and needs.
The risk is portability. An internal title or proprietary tool may mean little outside the firm. The employee should preserve non-confidential evidence of capability: designs, methods, metrics, public explanations, certifications where useful, and a clear account of decisions.
Employer training also needs a boundary between learning and unsupported responsibility. “Figure it out” is not development when the worker lacks access, feedback, time, or a safe way to fail.
Self-directed projects need feedback and closure
A project can be the fastest route to first contact with a technical problem. It can also become months of private setup with no external test.
Choose an inspectable outcome, use realistic constraints, preserve the evidence, and ask a qualified person or user to evaluate it. Publish a safe slice when possible. Do not use confidential employer data or code without permission.

Choose by the target occupation and next move
Begin with the role, not the prestige of the route.
Does the occupation require a statutory license, degree, protected title, security clearance, portfolio, or specific experience? Does the learner need income while training? Do they need broad theory, a rapid occupational transition, or a credential that supports later study? Can the employer provide real work across the standard? Is the provider's quality and outcome evidence credible?

Hybrid routes are normal. A graduate can take an apprenticeship where rules permit and prior learning is handled correctly. An apprentice can progress to higher education. An experienced worker can use a project to bridge into formal training.
The employer decision
An employer should use an apprenticeship when it can offer a real occupational role, protected training, supervision, and progression. It should use normal hiring plus training when the role or program does not fit an approved standard.
Do not treat apprenticeship funding as cheap labor. The employer still owes the job, wage, learning time, support, and evidence required for successful completion.
Do not choose a provider only from a sales presentation. Check the approved status, occupational expertise, training design, assessment arrangements, employer responsibilities, completion evidence, learner support, and current rules.
The learner decision
Ask to see the actual job, training plan, standard, provider, weekly learning pattern, mentor, assessment, wage, progression, and what happens if employment ends. Speak with current or former learners when possible.
For college, inspect modules, assessment, teaching contact, placement support, graduate destinations, total cost, and how often students produce work an employer can inspect.
The best route creates increasing capability and credible evidence without hiding its costs.
