Coachability Measurement Research Note

Coachability is better defined as a learning process than as agreement with advice. Observable stages include seeking or receiving feedback, understanding it, evaluating the source and evidence, choosing a test or action, observing the result, updating the decision, and transferring learning to later work.

A 2021 Coachability Scale study used four samples to develop workplace measures and reported evidence about factor structure, reliability, and validity. It called for research across more populations, cultures, behaviors, and outcomes.

A 2025 multi-study workplace scale examined awareness, openness, vulnerability, growth orientation, and external support. Reported predictive relationships with later engagement and impact were positive and modest.

A 2024 situational judgment study used scenarios and followed 800 participants for nine months. It offers an assessment route distinct from self-report.

No single source establishes a universal founder-coachability score. Feedback quality, power, context, stakes, repeated behavior, and later outcomes matter.

Refusal to take an assessment is not evidence of low coachability. The person may be objecting to unclear use, privacy risk, or coercion.
