Decision variables
Choose a format from the job, evidence, access, production cost, cadence, review burden, accessibility, and reuse path. Do not begin with a universal belief that interviews, video, solo audio, articles, or guides perform better.
| Variable | Decision question |
|---|---|
| Learning question | What must the creator understand or practice? |
| Reader job | What should the audience understand, decide, or do? |
| Evidence | Which sources, experience, data, or demonstrations are required? |
| Access | Does the work require a guest, product, location, dataset, or specialist? |
| Production | Which recording, editing, design, transcription, and review work is sustainable? |
| Accessibility | Can the audience perceive, navigate, and understand the result? |
| Reuse | Which durable notes, profiles, guides, clips, or updates can be created without thin duplication? |
| Risk | Which claims require legal, medical, safety, privacy, copyright, or specialist review? |
Format boundaries
A solo episode gives the creator control over schedule and practice. It can lack external perspective. An interview provides direct experience and interaction. It depends on guest access, preparation, consent, and careful attribution.
An essay supports a coherent argument. A guide supports a task. A profile owns a maintained entity record. A research report preserves methods, evidence, and limits. A field note records a bounded observation without pretending to be a complete article.
Evidence sources
GOV.UK's in-depth interview guidance treats interviews as a way to understand users, circumstances, work, and problems. Google Search's people-first guidance emphasizes intended audience, first-hand expertise, completeness, trust, authorship, method, and purpose. W3C writing guidance keeps the format connected to accessible structure and language.
YouTube retention can reveal moments that viewers leave, skip, or rewatch. It does not determine why without further review, and it should not turn every format decision into retention optimization.
Publication use
The public guide should end with a small pilot and an explicit decision record. Dalton's 25-episode guest threshold may appear only as a historical example of reducing coordination risk.
