E043 Historical Thesis and Correction Record
Episode thesis
The November 2024 transcript argues that Stripe's announced Bridge acquisition could give Stripe a stablecoin rail that competes with Visa and Mastercard. Dalton describes faster settlement, lower fees, cross-border conversion, wallet adoption, and greater control of the merchant relationship as possible advantages.
The episode also raises useful doubts. Customers may not want wallets. Merchants cannot impose a confusing payment method. Stripe could become another powerful intermediary. Visa and Mastercard could respond through their own products or partnerships.
Corrections required
The transcript's 90 percent market-share statement, transaction count, fee arithmetic, Treasury-holder ranking, and company-volume figures should not be repeated without current exact evidence.
Authorization, clearing, settlement, merchant payout, refund, dispute, and final account reconciliation are distinct. A blockchain confirmation does not settle every operational obligation.
Stablecoin use does not automatically remove foreign exchange, spreads, network fees, issuer risk, liquidity, wallet risk, screening, custody, accounting, tax, support, or off-ramp cost.
Bridge should not be described simply as a protocol that bridges blockchains. It is a stablecoin orchestration platform with products spanning movement, accounts, issuance, conversion, cards, and related infrastructure.
Later record
Stripe completed the Bridge acquisition on February 4, 2025. Stripe and Bridge later announced stablecoin financial accounts, stablecoin-linked Visa cards, Open Issuance, and expanded stablecoin acceptance and orchestration.
Those later products support the episode's infrastructure-control thesis. They also weaken a simple card-network replacement thesis because some stablecoin products use Visa, banks, issuers, processors, and fiat settlement.
Publication boundary
The Episode Story may preserve the prediction and explain how it aged. It must separate the November 2024 transcript, later first-party product claims, current documentation, enacted law, proposed rules, and Venture Step's analysis.
