England Apprenticeship Pathways Research Note

Current English apprenticeship rules distinguish regulated apprenticeships from ordinary workplace learning.

The employer must provide a relevant job, pay, a sufficient employment term, and formal off-the-job training. The current employer guide states a 20-percent requirement capped at an average of six hours a week.

The 2025 to 2026 funding rules control starts through July 31, 2026. New rules control later starts. Even privately funded apprenticeships must align to an approved standard, include off-the-job training, meet duration rules, and include independent end-point or equivalent assessment.

Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and other countries require separate records.
