Smart Safe Buying Guide: What to Verify Before Ordering
Evaluate a smart safe by threat, physical rating, anchoring, fallback access, power loss, privacy, updates, support, and vendor exit before comparing app features.
How to Evaluate a Smart Safe Before Buying One
Do not start with cameras, fingerprints, or the app. Start with the object you want to protect, the way it could be lost, the time available to an attacker, and what you can realistically do after an alert.
The right smart safe has independently supported physical protection, a sound installation, dependable local recovery, restrained data handling, secure update practices, and a support life that matches the asset. A long feature list cannot make up for missing evidence.
This guide does not rank products. Comparable independent evidence is too often absent, and different buyers face different threats.
Define the loss before choosing the product
A passport, backup drive, watch, medication key, paper recovery phrase, and business cash record do not create the same decision.
Write down the asset, replacement difficulty, confidentiality, fire sensitivity, water sensitivity, expected access frequency, authorized users, likely attacker, and desired response time. Decide whether the main threat is opportunistic removal, forced entry, insider access, fire, moisture, account takeover, vendor failure, or some combination.
The product can only be judged against that scenario.

The no-buy branch is part of the method. Missing evidence is not an invitation to fill the gap with marketing.
Ask for the exact physical rating
The words secure, hardened, heavy-duty, and pry-resistant do not identify a test.
UL Solutions lists UL 687 for burglary-resistant safes. It also describes a separate evaluation system under UL 1037 for residential security containers. Fire resistance for records is covered through a different standard, commonly UL 72.
Ask for the certification body, standard, class, exact model number, listing identifier, and current record. Check whether the shipped unit matches the listed construction.
Do not infer a class from steel gauge, bolt count, weight, fingerprint resolution, camera count, FCC authorization, or price. The FCC record for a wireless product addresses radio rules, not total security.
The Space Safe has FCC ID 2BEAZ-TSS1, with a public manual and radio test records. That documentation helps establish the model's wireless authorization and operating instructions. It does not establish burglary or fire resistance.
Treat anchoring as part of the system
A small safe may be easier to remove than to open on site. Anchoring changes the attack by connecting the product to a floor, wall, cabinet, or other structure.
The installation must match the substrate and the loaded weight. A strong anchor in weak material can fail with the material. Placement also affects visibility, tool access, camera view, power, network signal, heat, moisture, and the ability to reach a mechanical override.
The current Space Safe product page shows two holes in the back and two in the bottom and includes expansion anchors. It warns the buyer to make sure a wall can support the safe and its contents.
That is installation information, not a tested removal-resistance claim. Confirm fastener type, substrate, spacing, edge distance, and installer responsibility for the actual site.
Evaluate every access and bypass path
List the PIN, biometric, phone, temporary code, mechanical key, account recovery, service procedure, and factory reset.
For each path, ask who can use it, where the credential is stored, how attempts are limited, what appears in the activity record, how it is revoked, and whether it bypasses another control.
A fingerprint reader may be convenient but inconsistent for some users. A mechanical key may preserve access during a dead battery but defeat electronic logging or multi-factor authentication. A temporary PIN may reduce permanent sharing but still reach the safe during its active window. Account recovery may be easier to attack than the lock.
The Space Safe page says the mechanical key overrides electronic access and users are notified when a key is used. It also describes unique users, temporary PINs, fingerprints, and optional two-factor authentication. Verify those behaviors on the final production model and under network loss.
Test failure states, not only the demonstration
A store demonstration usually shows the happy path. The purchase decision needs the failure paths.

The Space Safe page says its backup battery lasts a few hours and the product can be opened with a key. It also says WiFi is not required unless the buyer wants notifications and all smart features. Those statements need a precise feature-by-feature offline matrix.
Separate alerts from monitored response
A motion event is not an alert. An alert is not delivery. Delivery is not human review. Human review is not emergency dispatch.
The Space App page describes a feature that sends a text to emergency services. It also says the capability is still being tested nationally. The company's terms say panic PIN and text 911 features are not monitored.
911.gov says a voice call is best when possible and text is an alternative when a call cannot be made. Text-to-911 is not available everywhere.
If emergency response matters, obtain the exact workflow in writing. Confirm the destination, location data, monitoring party, delivery confirmation, fallback, fees, jurisdiction coverage, and responsibility.
Read the privacy policy as a map of permitted data use
A camera-equipped safe may create a record of the home or business, the people who approach the safe, the times it opens, failed attempts, device movement, environmental conditions, temporary visitors, and recovery data.
SPACE's March 2023 privacy policy says the service may collect voice, video, photographs, location, access events, screen activity, settings, PIN attempts, user images, phone numbers, and connected-device information. It says recordings may be kept locally and in the cloud.
Ask what the current production system actually collects, which data stays local, which data reaches the vendor or providers, how long each copy remains, who can view it, and what deletion removes.
The policy is more than three years old as of this review and contains wallet and blockchain language. That does not prove misuse. It does mean the buyer should ask for a current product-specific explanation.
Demand an update and support commitment
A connected security product needs patches after sale. The vendor should publish how security issues are reported, how updates are authenticated, whether installation can be deferred, how failure is recovered, and how long the model will receive support.
NIST IR 8259B includes documentation, query reception, and information dissemination among the manufacturer's supporting capabilities. That includes communicating software-update terms and the end of support.
NIST SP 800-193 emphasizes protecting firmware from unauthorized changes, detecting changes, and recovering from attacks.

Examine delivery, warranty, and company continuity
Preorders move manufacturing and timing risk to the customer. Read the delivery language, cancellation terms, refund process, warranty, shipping damage process, repair route, replacement parts, and responsibility for data during service.
As of July 27, 2026, The Space Safe is listed at $1,299 with future delivery windows. SPACE's March 2025 update discusses partner problems, financial losses, production needs, and a search for investment.
That candor is useful. It is also a reason to evaluate what happens if the company cannot operate the app, cloud, update infrastructure, warranty program, or replacement-parts channel for the expected life of the safe.
Make the purchase decision from evidence
A strong decision file should contain the threat statement, exact certification record, installation design, local failure behavior, credential and recovery map, privacy answers, update policy, end-of-support date, warranty, delivery terms, and vendor-exit behavior.
If the physical rating is absent, write absent. If an emergency feature is not monitored, write not monitored. If the support period is unpublished, write unpublished. Precision is more useful than a forced score.
