Executive Hiring Horizon Record
Source claim
Elad Gil’s “Hiring executives” chapter recommends hiring for the next 12 to 18 months. It warns that a shorter horizon may not justify the search while a distant horizon can produce an overqualified or mismatched leader for the present work.
The chapter also recommends defining the role, learning from strong practitioners, and testing functional expertise, team building, collegiality, communication, ownership, and strategic thinking.
Contextual interpretation
The horizon is attributed operating advice, not a fixed employment rule, guaranteed tenure, or universal forecast window.
The company should describe the future product, customers, revenue model, team, management layers, systems, geography, regulation, capital, partners, and risks. It should distinguish commitments, forecasts, and aspirations.
Evidence scorecard
Each capability needs a relevant situation, observable behavior, expected outcome, and evidence source. Interviewers should receive distinct evidence assignments and record observations before group discussion.
Translation matters more than repetition. A candidate should explain which conditions made a prior playbook work and how the approach changes here.
Mutual-fit boundary
The company should disclose mandate, uncertainty, resources, authority, risk, reporting, board interface, and pace. Compensation, equity, location, privacy, references, accessibility, discrimination, conflicts, and recordkeeping require qualified, jurisdiction-aware review.
Handoff
The final scorecard should become the first version of the executive onboarding and success plan.
