Google announced custom Gems on August 28, 2024 for Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise subscribers. The launch post described reusable instructions, premade Gems, and desktop and mobile rollout.

Meta announced AI Studio in the United States on July 29, 2024. Its launch record emphasized custom AI characters, sharing across Meta surfaces, and creator AIs that could answer common direct messages and story replies with labeled responses.

These announcements establish the intended launch identity. They do not establish current availability, reliability, privacy, or suitability.

Current Gemini object

Google's current help describes a Gem as a saved customization for Gemini Apps. A creator can set a name and instructions, optionally add knowledge from device files, Google Drive, or supported notebook sources, preview the result, and use it in chat.

Current sharing documentation says access may be private, organization-limited, link-based, or public, depending on the account. People with access can view Gem instructions and uploaded files. Editors can modify or delete the Gem. Shared Gems and eligible uploaded files are stored in Google Drive.

Account, administrator, region, product surface, Keep Activity setting, connected apps, and current terms affect the data path. A same-day review is mandatory.

Current Meta object

Meta's current Instagram help describes a custom AI with a name, tagline, avatar, personality details, conversation starters, and audience controls. It may be restricted to Only Me or Close Friends, or made available to Everyone, subject to availability and review.

The same help states that Meta uses AI interactions to improve AI at Meta and may use profile and activity information to personalize interactions. It also states that creators generally cannot read other people's chats with a custom AI, with a separate exception for certain creator auto-reply uses.

Current Meta availability, policy, data use, moderation, disclosure, deletion, reporting, and distribution require same-day verification.

The useful comparison begins with the job and audience. It then examines instructions, knowledge, tools, memory, permissions, sharing, represented identity, bystanders, review, moderation, and shutdown.

Neither product name proves agentic execution. Neither vendor page proves independent accuracy, privacy compliance, organizational approval, or a safe public launch.
