Question

The E097 recording proved that one attachment flow worked in Dalton's account. A current public how-to needs to be rebuilt from present documentation and must say clearly which behaviors were not independently retested.

Current documented path

Google's starters and steps guide documents a When I get an email starter. It can be narrowed by sender or recipient, included or excluded words, subject, attachment presence, email size, and default Gmail label. The guide says custom labels are not available in that starter.

The same guide documents Add email attachments to Drive. The step saves uploaded files such as PDFs to a selected Drive folder. It does not save linked Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, or automatically generated meeting notes.

Google's current getting-started and troubleshooting pages impose material file boundaries. Flows can fail with Shared Drives, shared folders, missing file access, or administrator restrictions. The tutorial should use a private folder created for the test and tell the reader to confirm current account behavior.

Safe test design

Google's test-run guidance says tests use real data and take real actions. The safe example is one synthetic PDF sent from a controlled account to the flow owner's inbox. The subject should contain a unique token that the starter requires. The PDF should contain no personal, financial, health, employment, legal, customer, or production information.

The expected result is one saved PDF in the private destination and one completed activity record. The tester should also send a message without the token and a message without an attachment. Neither should create a saved file.

The documentation reviewed here does not promise deduplication, filename transformation, retention enforcement, malware handling, or content-based data classification for the save step. Those behaviors require separate controls or a different system.

Operational finish

After the controlled run, the owner should inspect Activity, open the saved file, verify the destination, confirm the two negative tests, remove the synthetic artifacts, and decide whether the starter is narrow enough for live use. A broad "all email with attachments" trigger should be treated as an explicit choice, not a default.

The flow needs an owner, failure-review routine, and retirement condition. A useful attachment archive can quietly become a second unmanaged repository if nobody owns retention, duplicates, access, and cleanup.

Editorial use

Use this note for a numbered how-to with a clear disclosure: the current steps were verified against Google's July 27, 2026 documentation, while the first-hand E097 run is historical and the current account was not mutated for this article.
