Google AI Overviews Launch and Publisher Measurement Record

Google began the broad United States rollout of AI Overviews on May 14, 2024 after Search Labs testing. The product generated an overview for some queries and presented links for further exploration.

Current Search Central documentation treats AI Overviews and AI Mode as distinct Search features. It says ordinary Search eligibility and people-first content guidance remain relevant, with no special AI markup required. Eligible pages must be indexed and allowed to appear with snippets, but eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out and that traffic from the features appears in the overall Search Console Web report. Google also provides existing snippet and indexing controls for limiting content shown in Search.

Those are first-party product statements. They do not establish the effect on a particular publisher. A useful publisher record tracks affected query classes, impressions, rank, overview presence, citations, referrals, landing pages, conversions, assisted conversions, brand search, and observation dates. It compares those measures with a credible baseline and records product changes.

The safe conclusion is not that AI Overviews always help or always reduce traffic. Search moved more synthesis into the results page, and each publisher must measure the consequences for its own pages and audience.
