Google SynthID Watermark: Features and Limits

SynthID embeds imperceptible signals in supported Google-generated media. This profile covers detection, supported media, persistence claims, and limits.

SynthID is Google's imperceptible watermarking and detection system for supported AI-generated media. Google describes current support across images, audio, text, and video.

The system is designed to embed a signal during generation and let a compatible detector look for it later. A detected signal can support a tool-specific origin claim. A missing signal does not establish that media is human-made.

How the system fits

The current SynthID product page describes media-specific embedding and detection. The signal is intended to remain unobtrusive to the audience while surviving common modifications.

This differs from a content-based AI detector. A generic detector learns patterns from authentic and synthetic examples. SynthID looks for a signal placed by a supported Google system.

It also differs from Content Credentials. A watermark can answer whether a signal is detected. A signed provenance record can carry a richer history of origin, tools, ingredients, and actions.

Supported media and access

Google says SynthID is used across supported image, audio, text, and video generation. Gemini can check supported images, video, and audio for a SynthID watermark. Google also describes a separate early-access SynthID Detector portal for broader media workflows.

Availability, supported formats, result wording, thresholds, and access can change. A verification record should capture the tool, date, file, result, and the product documentation used at the time.

Persistence claims

Google says the signal is designed to survive common transformations. Its original image-watermark explainer discusses changes such as filters, color adjustments, compression, and cropping while also saying the system is not foolproof against extreme manipulation.

Public language should preserve both parts. "Designed to survive common edits" is a bounded vendor claim. "Cannot be removed" would be too strong.

NIST's synthetic-content transparency report places watermarks among several complementary approaches. It calls for realistic testing across transformations, unfamiliar systems, and adversarial conditions.

Interpretation

A positive result from an appropriate SynthID detector supports the conclusion that the checked media contains a signal associated with supported Google-generated content. The conclusion still depends on the product's result category and inspection conditions.

A negative result leaves several possibilities open. The file may be human-made. It may come from another generator. It may be an unsupported type or older workflow. A transformation may have affected detection.

SynthID also does not decide whether the content is misleading. A clearly labeled generated illustration can be honest. A real photograph can carry a false caption.

Product and publisher questions

A product team should confirm which model and media path embeds the signal, whether edits preserve it, which detectors can inspect it, how uncertain results appear, what telemetry is collected, and how the system interacts with Content Credentials and platform labels.

A publisher should retain the original generation record and public disclosure even when watermarking is available. The watermark is one evidence layer, not the whole authenticity record.
