GPT-4o Demonstration, Rollout, and Lifecycle Record

OpenAI announced GPT-4o on May 13, 2024 as an "omni" model designed to accept combinations of text, audio, image, and video and produce text, audio, and image outputs. The launch page combined model description, evaluations, demonstrations, and planned access.

The product release began with text and image inputs and text outputs. New audio and video capabilities were scheduled for staged access. A launch demonstration therefore established that OpenAI showed a capability under its conditions, not that every user, plan, region, API, device, or workflow had immediate access.

OpenAI reported a 232 millisecond minimum and 320 millisecond average audio response time in its testing. Those are vendor measurements, not guarantees for end-to-end product latency.

The later GPT-4o system card documents evaluated risks involving audio, voice, speakers, accents, sensitive traits, robustness, misinformation, and other behaviors. It does not establish fitness for every deployment.

OpenAI retired GPT-4o from ordinary ChatGPT use on February 13, 2026, with additional Custom GPT access ending in April. Current API documentation still lists GPT-4o and dated snapshots, while the broader model catalog labels it deprecated. ChatGPT retirement and API lifecycle are separate facts.

OpenAI did not publish a GPT-4o parameter count in the reviewed launch record. The E016 outline's trillion-parameter estimate is excluded.
