Meeting Consent and Processing Research Note
Recording, transcribing, summarizing, retaining, sharing, and acting on a conversation are separate processing events. Consent or authority for one does not automatically settle the others.
United States federal law contains a one-party-consent provision for certain interceptions in 18 U.S.C. 2511. State rules can be stricter. California Penal Code section 632 generally requires all-party consent to record a confidential communication. Jurisdiction, participant location, subject matter, workplace policy, privilege, and contractual duties can change the answer.
Local processing changes the data path. It does not remove the need to disclose recording, define permitted uses, restrict access, set retention, and respect deletion or legal-hold duties.
This note is an editorial boundary, not legal advice. Public material should tell readers to determine the applicable law and organizational policy before recording or processing a meeting.
