Meta AI: Distribution, Models, and Product History
A dated Meta AI record separating the assistant from Llama models, Meta apps, glasses, Quest, the standalone app, and later action features.
Meta AI Distribution and Product Record
Meta AI is an assistant product distributed through Meta's applications, web experiences, standalone software, and devices. It is not one Llama release, one AI character, one pair of glasses, or one Quest feature.
The distinction matters because product behavior can change when the model, interface, account, data source, connector, region, or action authority changes.

The 2023 assistant and characters
Meta announced Meta AI and a set of AI characters in September 2023. The characters had distinct personas and appeared in supported messaging products.
They were conversational experiences. The launch record did not establish autonomous agents able to schedule appointments, order goods, coordinate with other assistants, or manage a person's day.
E014 used those characters to imagine a more coordinated assistant. That belongs in the forecast record, not the product record.
The Llama 3 product state
In April 2024 Meta announced Meta AI built with Llama 3. It described distribution through Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and a web experience.
The announcement also said Meta AI was available on Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in the United States and was coming to Quest.
"Coming to Quest" is a planned rollout state. It should not be rewritten as general Quest 3 availability at the E014 recording date.
The standalone app
Meta launched the Meta AI app in April 2025. The first version was built with Llama 4 and emphasized voice, personalization, memory, a Discover feed, continuity with meta.ai, and a companion role for AI glasses.
This app changed the entity map. The assistant could have its own application and history while also appearing inside social and messaging products.
It also made account and data boundaries more important. A shared assistant name does not mean every surface uses the same context, memory, feature, or policy.
The 2026 model transition
In April 2026 Meta introduced Muse Spark as a product-focused model for Meta AI. Meta said it powered the app and website and would roll into messaging, social products, and glasses.
This means a current Meta AI statement should not automatically be attributed to Llama 4.
The model layer, product layer, and product surface need separate names and dates.
Action features
In July 2026 Meta said Meta AI powered by Muse Spark 1.1 could make plans, connect to email and calendar applications, create slides, and handle tasks in supported product contexts.
That later direction resembles part of Dalton's 2024 forecast. It does not prove that the forecast was an announced Llama 4 plan.
Action also changes the evaluation. A conversational answer can be reviewed before use. A connected assistant may read data, create artifacts, send changes, or affect other people.
The user needs explicit authority, least privilege, confirmation rules, logs, correction, rollback, connector controls, and a stop path.
Device surfaces
On AI glasses, the assistant may receive spoken prompts, images, location, and device context. On Quest, it may operate inside a spatial interface. In messaging, it may interact with conversations or shared content.
Those inputs and affected people differ. Product privacy cannot be summarized only at the brand level.
Verify exact activation, input, account, model, processing, retention, sharing, action, and deletion for the current surface.
AI characters, assistants, and models
An AI character is a persona or experience. Meta AI is an assistant product. Llama 3 and Llama 4 are model families. Muse Spark is a later product-focused model line. Quest 3 and AI glasses are devices.
Keeping these entities separate prevents four common errors: a persona becomes an autonomous agent, a model launch becomes universal product access, a device becomes its assistant, or a later capability is projected backward.
The maintained [[Meta AI Product Profile]] owns current entity facts. This E014 record owns the distribution history and the boundary between assistant, model, device, account, and action.
What to verify before use
A current evaluation should name the exact Meta AI surface and date. Test representative questions and actions, identify which data the assistant can access, and confirm whether a connector is read-only or can make changes.
Record confirmation prompts, action previews, logs, notifications, correction, rollback, and deletion. Include other people whose messages, calendar entries, images, or shared context may be processed.
If the task depends on a product that is rolling out gradually, lack of access is part of the result. A company announcement does not establish availability for every account or country.
