Meta AI: From the Llama 3 Launch to the Current Product

Meta AI changed from a Llama 3 assistant across Meta apps into a standalone, personalized, multimodal, and action-capable product with newer model layers.

Meta AI From the Llama 3 Launch to the Current Product

Meta AI is Meta’s consumer assistant product. It is not a synonym for Llama 3, every Meta application, a Quest headset, or a pair of AI glasses.

That separation matters because the model, interface, account context, data sources, product surface, and action authority have all changed since E013.

The April 2024 product

Meta’s April 2024 announcement described Meta AI built with Llama 3 and distributed through Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and meta.ai, subject to rollout and region.

The assistant could answer questions, work inside conversations, retrieve information, and create images. Meta also described an Imagine experience that updated an image while the person typed.

Dalton tested the web product while preparing E013. The surviving outline records a personable tone, fewer refusals than one recent session with another assistant, help navigating Meta’s business products, and a fast image-generation interaction.

Those observations establish one source-era experience. They do not establish current speed, quality, refusal behavior, factual accuracy, or product availability.

Model and product are different

Llama 3 supplied model technology. Meta AI supplied the interface, account experience, retrieval path, product policy, distribution, and rollout.

A Llama 3 benchmark does not prove that Meta AI is the best assistant for a task. A good experience with Meta AI does not prove that every deployment of Llama 3 will behave the same way.

That distinction became clearer as the product changed models.

The standalone application

Meta launched the Meta AI app in April 2025. The first version used Llama 4 and emphasized voice, personalization, memory, a Discover feed, continuity with meta.ai, and a companion role for Meta’s AI glasses.

The app created another product surface with its own history and settings. It also increased the importance of account context. Meta said personalization could draw from details a person shared and, in supported settings, information across connected Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Nothing should be inferred from the shared brand name alone. The app, web, messaging, social, and device experiences can differ.

A current evaluation should test the complete product rather than importing a conclusion from the underlying model. Retrieval, system instructions, account context, moderation, interface design, latency, and regional rollout can change the answer even when two surfaces carry the same Meta AI name.

The 2026 model transition

In April 2026 Meta introduced Muse Spark as a product-focused model for Meta AI. Meta said it powered the app and website and would roll into messaging, social products, and glasses.

The update added product claims around multimodal perception, voice, live camera use, shopping, and parallel subagents. Current Meta AI statements should therefore identify the model and surface instead of attributing everything to Llama.

In July 2026 Meta announced Muse Spark 1.1 action features. Meta said supported experiences could make plans, run recurring work, perform research, create slides, and connect to selected email and calendar applications.

That direction resembles part of Dalton’s later E014 forecast. It does not mean Llama 3 shipped an autonomous agent in 2024.

Data and action boundaries

Meta’s generative AI privacy guide describes a collection of AI features and directs people to current terms and controls. A useful product review must go further and name the exact surface.

For each use, identify the input, account, personalization, retrieval source, model, retention, sharing, human review, connector, action authority, correction, deletion, and affected people.

An answer can be reviewed before use. A connected assistant may read a calendar, inspect email, create an artifact, or produce recurring work. That requires least privilege, previews, confirmation rules, logs, notification, correction, rollback, and a stop path.

Product access may roll out by account or country. Lack of access is a valid result, not a reason to generalize from an announcement.

How the episodes connect

E013 owns the Llama 3 launch experience and the distinction between model and assistant. E014 adds Quest 3, AI glasses, ambient context, and the forecast of more coordinated assistance. E028 and E033 examine how public assistants and custom personas should be scoped and tested. E120 provides the current AI-coworker frame.

The maintained [[Meta AI Product Profile]] owns the canonical entity. This E013 page owns the path from the April 2024 Llama 3 product state to later app, model, and action layers.

AI assisted with research, structure, drafting, and validation. Current features, models, accounts, regions, data terms, connectors, and actions require a publication-day check. Publication is not authorized.
