Meta Horizon OS Partner Platform Research Record

Meta announced Meta Horizon OS on April 22, 2024 as the operating system powering Meta Quest headsets and a platform intended for third-party mixed-reality hardware.

The launch record named ASUS Republic of Gamers, Lenovo, Xbox, and Qualcomm relationships. ASUS and Lenovo were described as developing future devices. Xbox was associated with a planned limited-edition Meta Quest. Those are announcement states, not proof that every named product later shipped.

Meta said the platform began on Android Open Source Project foundations and combined tracking, interaction, passthrough, scene understanding, spatial anchors, identity, avatars, social graphs, store distribution, monetization, and companion-app services.

The presence of AOSP components does not establish that the complete Meta platform was released as open-source software. The announcement describes partner access and a wider application ecosystem. It does not provide a complete source repository, an open-source license for all platform components, or unrestricted device access.

Current Meta Horizon OS developer documentation shows an active developer platform with SDKs, references, performance requirements, store processes, and device-specific capabilities. That material is current implementation evidence, not proof that the 2024 partner-device plans were completed.

The right comparison is therefore not simply open versus closed. A platform evaluation should identify who can build hardware, who can publish applications, which APIs and standards are available, which services remain controlled, how identity and commerce work, what certification applies, and how an operator exits if the platform changes.

E013 can preserve the economic attraction of one platform reaching more devices. It cannot claim inevitable adoption or open-source status.
