Meta Quest 3: Launch and Product Family Record

A dated Meta Quest 3 record covering the 2023 launch, mixed reality hardware, the later Quest 3S family, personal monitor claims, and buying limits.

Meta Quest 3 Launch and Product Family Record

Meta Quest 3 launched as a standalone virtual and mixed reality headset in October 2023. It combined immersive applications with color passthrough and spatial understanding designed to place digital content inside a view of the physical environment.

This is a dated product-history record. It does not recommend a current purchase.

The 2023 launch

Meta's Quest 3 launch record set an October 10, 2023 release date. The 128GB version started at $499.99, while the 512GB version launched at a higher price.

The company described a 4K+ display system, pancake optics, Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform, full-color passthrough, depth sensing, spatial understanding, hand tracking, and redesigned Touch Plus controllers.

Those specifications and comparisons come from Meta. A current buyer should confirm the exact model, storage, included accessories, price, region, warranty, support, and software state.

Mixed reality and passthrough

Quest 3 can show virtual content over a camera-based view of the physical environment. This makes room-scale games, media, fitness, creation, and spatial productivity possible.

Passthrough is not ordinary vision. Camera exposure, latency, resolution, distortion, depth, lighting, and software affect the view. A user still needs a safe physical space and should test transitions, boundaries, interruption, and loss of tracking.

The headset's spatial understanding can support useful experiences without making every room model exact.

The E014 monitor comparison

Dalton's recovered source describes replacing multiple physical monitors with virtual displays for some work. That is a personal use observation.

The comparison depends on display clarity, text size, application support, keyboard and pointer input, comfort, heat, pressure, battery, motion sensitivity, eye correction, focus, organizational policy, privacy, and the duration of the task.

A person editing documents for thirty minutes may reach a different result from a developer working eight hours, a designer judging color, or an employee using managed applications.

The correct evaluation is accepted work completed under representative conditions, not the number of virtual screens shown in a demonstration.

Quest 3S changed the family

Meta introduced Quest 3S in October 2024. The company positioned it as a lower-priced route to the same generation of mixed reality and performance, with hardware tradeoffs.

Meta also reduced the 512GB Quest 3 price and began phasing out the 128GB configuration. That later family state did not exist when E014 was planned.

Quest 3 and Quest 3S should not be collapsed. A buyer should compare optics, display, storage, size, sensors, comfort, included hardware, price, and intended applications.

Meta AI was a separate rollout

The April 2024 source sometimes joined Quest 3, Ray-Ban Meta, Meta AI, and Llama 3 too tightly.

Meta said Meta AI was coming to Quest. That did not establish general Quest 3 integration with Llama 3 at E014's recording date.

The assistant product, underlying model, operating-system feature, region, account, and device access need their own records.

Comfort and safety

Meta's VR comfort and safety guide predates Quest 3 but illustrates the need to check comfort ratings, physical space, breaks, passthrough controls, and health and safety warnings.

Users should inspect the current Quest safety material for the exact device. Motion sickness, vision, balance, seizure, mobility, age, guardian, and accessibility considerations can change the appropriate use.

What Quest 3 does not prove

The product does not prove that headsets will replace laptops or monitors, that every workplace should adopt spatial computing, or that a mixed reality demonstration will become a durable workflow.

It also does not prove that a research Codec Avatar can be created by an ordinary user with a phone scan. Research capture and consumer availability are separate.

The maintained [[Meta Quest 3 Product Profile]] owns current entity information. This E014 page preserves launch state, later family change, Dalton's personal comparison, and the evidence needed before buying.

A responsible trial

A useful Quest trial should use the exact applications and files required by the task. Set a baseline on the existing computer or device, then compare setup time, accepted work, text clarity, input accuracy, interruption, comfort, fatigue, battery, recovery, and total time.

Repeat the trial long enough to expose fit and lifecycle problems. Record motion, lighting, network, room, boundary, accessibility setting, software version, and accessories.

The result may support one bounded use without supporting all-day replacement. A headset can be valuable for training, media, fitness, or spatial work while remaining the wrong tool for another task.
