Microsoft 365 Copilot and Slack AI should be compared by the work surface, source corpus, citations, access model, administrative controls, meeting behavior, and plan available to the organization. A generic feature count cannot identify the better product for a particular workflow.
As of July 28, 2026, Microsoft presents Copilot as an AI layer across Microsoft 365 applications, Microsoft Graph, chat, search, and agents. Slack presents AI inside conversations, huddles, search, canvases, workflows, Slackbot, and connected enterprise search. The relevant question is where the work and authoritative evidence already live.
This is a dated product reference, not a performance ranking. Vendor documentation establishes intended current behavior. It does not prove accuracy, productivity, security approval, or organizational fit.

Microsoft 365 Copilot’s documented surface
Microsoft’s current Microsoft 365 Copilot overview describes Copilot across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Loop, chat, search, Microsoft Graph, and other Microsoft 365 experiences.
The overview distinguishes Microsoft 365 Copilot from Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. The licensed Copilot product can use organizational data through Microsoft Graph and connected services. Copilot Chat has a different default grounding and can work with organizational material supplied through supported contexts or agents.
Source behavior is not uniform. Microsoft says Teams chat Copilot uses the selected chat thread, can summarize up to a documented window, and returns clickable citations. Meeting Copilot uses the transcript for meeting questions. Broader Microsoft 365 Copilot experiences can use content from email, chats, documents, meetings, and other Graph-backed sources the user can access.
That variation should appear in the evaluation record. “Copilot answered” is incomplete unless the evaluator records which Copilot surface produced the answer.
Slack AI’s documented surface
Slack’s current AI feature guide describes conversation summaries, huddle notes, automatic search filters, search answers, recaps, file summaries, translations, workflow automation, message explanations, canvas generation, Slackbot, and enterprise search.
The documented feature set varies by plan. Role and administrator configuration can restrict access.
Search answers can cite the Slack messages or files used. Enterprise search can extend retrieval to connected sources on the documented plan. That makes Slack more than a summarizer of chat, but the organization still needs to verify which connectors are active, which source is authoritative, and whether each user’s access is appropriate.
Slack’s channel-centered organization can be valuable when project context already lives in the conversation. It can also preserve the limitations of that context. A channel may contain decisions, drafts, jokes, stale claims, and informal work without a clear authority hierarchy.
Meeting notes are different products
Teams and Slack both offer AI-assisted meeting records, but the surrounding objects and controls differ.
Microsoft’s recording and transcription overview documents separate behavior for meetings, events, and calls. It describes policy, licensing, organizer, consent, storage, expiration, download, copy, and Copilot dependencies.
Slack’s huddle-notes documentation says someone normally starts AI notes, participants are notified, and the system uses the live conversation and huddle-thread messages. The notes, participant list, topics, actions, and embedded transcript appear in a canvas. Slack says anyone with access to the channel or direct message can view the notes, and the canvas can be shared.

Permissions require two separate questions
The first question is whether the product respects the permissions enforced by the platform. The second is whether those permissions match the organization’s intended access.
Microsoft says Copilot only shows organizational data the user has permission to access. Slack says its AI-generated responses use information available to the requesting member.
Those protections do not repair an old shared folder, an overbroad channel, an incorrectly inherited permission, or a document that should have been archived. AI retrieval can reveal a governance failure without causing the original access problem.
Test both layers. Use paired accounts to confirm enforced access, then have information owners review whether the resulting access is appropriate.
Administrative controls affect the product being tested
Slack’s AI access documentation documents plan-dependent controls over feature access. It also describes additional settings for huddle notes, search sharing and file use, AI workflow steps, message explanations, Slackbot file use, canvas actions, and web search.
Microsoft’s security, privacy, and compliance documentation describes how Microsoft 365 Copilot works within Microsoft 365 security and compliance controls. Microsoft says prompts, responses, and Microsoft Graph data are not used to train the foundation models used by Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Slack’s security documentation for AI features says customer data remains within Slack-controlled infrastructure for its native AI features and is not used to train large language models.
These are vendor claims and architecture descriptions. Procurement and review still need the current contract, subprocessors, data location, retention, audit, incident, model, connector, and tenant configuration.
Slack also maintains a dated product update record that can reveal new controls and changed behavior before a comparison page is refreshed. Product documentation and release history should be checked together.
What this tracker cannot decide
The tracker cannot tell whether either product will save time in a specific organization. It cannot measure the quality of a summary, the authority of a retrieved document, the cost of correction, the usability of the interface, or the consequence of an error.
It also cannot convert a vendor’s usage or productivity study into a local result. Work composition, source quality, policies, users, and review expectations differ.
