Minimum Viable Commitment Design Record
Definition
A minimum viable commitment is the smallest safe action that still maintains a meaningful relationship with a chosen practice. It is an editorial operating term for this package, not a validated clinical technique or universal habit law.
Required fields
| Field | Record |
|---|---|
| Chosen practice | The activity the person actually wants or needs to maintain |
| Reason | Why the practice matters and whether the reason is self-endorsed |
| Floor | The smallest action that counts without misrepresenting completion |
| Ceiling | The optional larger action when capacity and conditions allow |
| Cue | When, where, or after what event the floor becomes relevant |
| Safe stop | Conditions that mean pause, change, or qualified help |
| Exception | Planned travel, illness, care, access, safety, or policy cases |
| Recovery | The next safe action after a miss |
| Review | Date and evidence for keeping, increasing, reducing, or ending it |
Evidence boundary
The method is consistent with research on specific goals, implementation intentions, and context-linked repetition. The 2017 goal-setting meta-analysis reported a small positive average effect across varied behaviors and identified meaningful moderators. It does not prove that the easiest possible goal is always best.
Lally and colleagues' real-world habit study observed increasing automaticity with repetition in a consistent context and substantial individual variation. A 2024 systematic review of habit formation likewise found variation in time, method, population, and behavior.
The floor should not be a concealed promise to complete the ceiling. If ten minutes genuinely counts, stopping at ten minutes is completion. If a warm-up is required for safety, the floor includes it. If the practice is unsafe or inappropriate under current conditions, the correct minimum may be rest, cancellation, rescheduling, or a professional conversation.
Editorial rule
Do not say small actions inevitably snowball into large outcomes. Say a clear floor can reduce ambiguity and preserve a next step for some practices. Measure whether it works for this person, practice, and context.
