Nano Banana Lineage Research Note

Editorial conclusion

Nano Banana first served as the public codename for an anonymous LMArena submission that Google later identified as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Google retained the name at the August 26, 2025 launch and subsequently expanded it into a family brand.

The E082 description of the name as a leaked internal codename is not supported by Google's later first-person account. The raw transcript must remain unchanged. Derived pages should carry the correction.

Google's name history says product manager Naina Raisinghani formed the name from the personal nicknames "Naina Banana" and "Nano." The team needed a public codename for LMArena late in the submission process.

Google's August 2025 launch record establishes the original feature set and launch framing. The current developer guide establishes the four-model family state as reviewed on July 27, 2026.

Usage and market boundaries

Google reported more than five billion images generated by October 2025 and described expansion into additional products. That is a first-party usage statement. It does not establish unique users, retention, revenue, market leadership, or causation.

No original App Store ranking evidence was recovered with E082. The episode title's "dethroned ChatGPT" language should not appear as a durable factual conclusion.

Naming boundary

The family name alone is no longer enough for a reproducible test. Public evaluation should record the model identifier, date, product surface, account conditions, and any version label the interface exposed.
