What the product is

Gemini Notebook is a research and learning environment organized around notebooks and sources. A user adds material, asks questions, and receives answers that can point back to passages in the selected sources.

The current product help describes support for documents, web pages, public YouTube videos, audio, slides, and other listed formats. It also describes outputs such as study guides, briefings, audio overviews, mind maps, and other artifacts.

The launch history

Google introduced Project Tailwind at I/O 2023. The company began rolling it out under the NotebookLM name in July 2023 as an experimental Google Labs product.

Grounding differs by surface

Current Google help distinguishes the standalone notebook product from notebook use inside Gemini Apps.

In the standalone experience, chat answers are grounded in notebook sources. In Gemini Apps, a notebook can contribute context while the response may also use web search or other tools. The activity and retention paths can differ too.

The distinction is easy to miss because the same notebook identity may appear in both places. A reviewer should record which surface produced an answer before relying on the citation behavior.

What citations do

Gemini Notebook can show quoted text and navigate a reader to source context. That helps answer three practical questions: which document was selected, which passage influenced the answer, and whether the generated statement resembles the source.

Measure accepted answers, citation fidelity, reviewer time, corrections, unacceptable failures, maintenance, and total effort. Do not evaluate the product from an Audio Overview alone.
