Product model

A NotebookLM notebook combines selected sources, chat history, notes, instructions, and generated Studio artifacts. Current Google documentation describes chat as grounded in selected notebook sources and uses inline citations to expose supporting passages.

The product is not one fixed behavior across every surface. Current NotebookLM chat, NotebookLM features available through subscription tiers, Notebooks in Gemini, public sharing, mobile applications, Workspace, Education, and Cloud accounts have distinct capabilities and data terms.

Source path

Sources can be uploaded copies, pasted text, imported files, auto-synced Google Drive material, web-page text, public YouTube transcripts, audio transcripts, images, or discovered sources, depending on current support.

A web URL does not import a whole site. Current help says it brings in page text, not nested pages or embedded media.

Google-file comments and footnotes may not be imported. A source can therefore appear present while important qualifying material is absent from the notebook representation.

Answer path

The user selects sources. The system retrieves material it judges relevant, produces an answer, and attaches citations. A citation can open quoted material in context.

That path supports inspection. It does not prove that retrieval found every relevant passage, that the answer represented the passage faithfully, or that the selected source set was authoritative and complete.

Generated formats

Study guides, briefings, mind maps, Audio Overviews, video, slides, quizzes, and other formats are transformations of source material. They are not new evidence.

Current Audio Overview documentation explicitly warns about inaccuracies and audio glitches.

Data and sharing

Account type controls the applicable terms and protections. Consumer feedback can include prompts, sources, uploads, and outputs for human review. Current Workspace and Education documentation states different treatment.

Public notebook viewers may still reach underlying sources or artifacts even when a chat-focused view hides them. Hiding material in the interface is not an access-control decision.

Refresh boundary

Do not freeze source limits, output formats, plans, models, sharing behavior, mobile behavior, languages, account protections, or prices into evergreen conclusions. Verify them on the publication day.
