NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook Product Record

Google introduced Project Tailwind at I/O 2023 and began rolling it out as NotebookLM in July 2023. By May 2024, the product centered selected sources, source-grounded chat, and citations. Google demonstrated an early Audio Overviews prototype at I/O 2024.

On July 16, 2026, Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. Google described it as the same standalone research product with deeper connections to the Gemini app and Google Search. The announcement also described a secure cloud computer and code execution for certain paid users, with a wider Pro rollout planned.

Current help distinguishes the standalone notebook experience from notebook use inside Gemini Apps. In the standalone product, chat answers use notebook sources. In Gemini Apps, notebooks can be part of a broader response that may use web search or other tools. Data retention and activity behavior also differ across those surfaces.

Current source support includes documents, slides, sheets, text, Markdown, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, web pages, public YouTube videos, audio, images, and other listed formats. Limits vary by plan and can change.

This record preserves the historical NotebookLM name for E017 and uses Gemini Notebook for the current product. It does not treat the rename as a new product or project 2026 capabilities backward into the 2024 episode.
