OpenAI and the GPT-4o Launch: Company Role

A dated record of OpenAI's role in GPT-4o research, launch, ChatGPT rollout, safety reporting, retirement, and the separate API lifecycle.

OpenAI's Role in the GPT-4o Launch

OpenAI developed GPT-4o, demonstrated it, published the launch evaluations, rolled it into ChatGPT and the API, documented risks, and later managed its product retirement. Those roles make OpenAI the primary source for the model's official chronology.

They do not make every company statement independent evidence. A useful company record separates organization, model, product, interface, report, and lifecycle.

The organization

OpenAI's current company materials describe it as an AI research and deployment company. They say the organization consists of the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation and the for-profit OpenAI Group, with the Foundation governing the Group. Its current model catalog shows the separate product and model families that sit beneath the broader organization.

That structure is current as of this record's July 2026 verification date. It should not be projected backward without a date, and it should be rechecked before publication because organizational structure can change.

The company identity helps a reader find research, products, safety materials, careers, support, and official statements. It does not turn a mission statement into evidence that a particular deployment is beneficial.

The model role

OpenAI's May 13, 2024 launch introduced GPT-4o as an omni model designed across text, audio, image, and video. The current GPT-4o API record preserves the model name and dated snapshots separately from ChatGPT.

The company reported evaluations, latency measurements, and safety work. It also showed live demonstrations that made spoken and visual interaction feel more continuous.

Those are several evidence types on one page. The model description tells readers what OpenAI designed. The evaluation reports vendor test results. The demonstration shows selected interactions. The rollout language establishes intended availability. None should silently substitute for another.

The ChatGPT product role

OpenAI used GPT-4o to expand capabilities in ChatGPT. The launch began with text and image inputs and text outputs, while richer audio and video experiences were planned for later staged access.

ChatGPT added interface, account, policy, memory, tool, safety, and product behavior around the model. A ChatGPT result is not explained by the base model alone.

That distinction became more important as OpenAI added voice, image, realtime, and other systems with separate model names and lifecycles.

The safety-reporting role

OpenAI published the GPT-4o system card after the launch. It documents evaluations and mitigation work involving audio, speakers, voices, accents, sensitive traits, robustness, misinformation, and other risk areas.

The report is a necessary source for understanding the developer's evaluation. It is not independent certification and does not establish suitability for every language, country, disability, audience, workplace, customer, or high-consequence decision.

Users still need representative task evaluation, privacy and consent review, data authority, qualified human review, failure recovery, and monitoring.

The lifecycle role

OpenAI announced GPT-4o's retirement from ordinary ChatGPT for February 13, 2026. The company explained that most usage had shifted to newer models and that some users had valued GPT-4o's conversational style. The API maintains a separate deprecation record.

The retirement applied to ChatGPT product access under the published schedule. OpenAI said there were no API changes at that time.

Current GPT-4o API documentation still lists the model and snapshots, while the broader model catalog labels GPT-4o deprecated. A developer should treat current documentation, deprecation notices, and account access as the authority for any migration.

What the role does not establish

OpenAI did not publish a parameter count in the reviewed launch record. The organization name cannot validate an estimate.

The company's reported latency is not a guarantee. A demonstration is not evidence of universal release. A system card is not approval for a workflow. ChatGPT retirement is not automatically an API shutdown.

The organization also should not be collapsed into Microsoft. Partnerships, infrastructure, investment, integrations, and product distribution do not by themselves establish corporate control or responsibility for every claim.

How this page should be used

Use this record to understand who created and documented GPT-4o and where the main first-party evidence came from. Use the model record for capabilities and lifecycle. Use product documentation for current access. Use task-specific testing for an actual workflow.

The maintained [[OpenAI Company Profile]] owns current company identity and official routes. This E016 record owns OpenAI's dated role in the GPT-4o launch so that corporate background supports entity clarity without becoming proof of model performance.

That division keeps future maintenance honest. A change in OpenAI's structure, leadership, support routes, or mission belongs in the company profile. A change in GPT-4o API availability belongs in the model documentation and lifecycle record.

It also protects attribution. OpenAI can authoritatively describe what it announced, shipped, measured, and retired. Independent reviewers must still judge whether the evidence supports a broader claim about safety, reliability, workflow value, or public impact.
