RCS Conversation State Record

RCS on iPhone is not one permanent phone capability. It is a conversation state produced by software, carrier service, region, plan, recipient support, feature implementation, account state, network availability, and fallback.

Apple's current RCS support page states that iPhone RCS requires iOS 18 and a carrier plan that supports RCS. Availability varies by carrier and region. RCS can carry text, higher-resolution photos and video, links, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators.

Apple's May 2026 documentation also describes beta end-to-end encrypted RCS beginning with iOS 26.5 for supported carriers. The carrier of every participant matters. The visible encrypted label and lock indicator establish the state of a conversation more directly than a general carrier or device claim.

GSMA Universal Profile 3.0 includes requirements for RCS end-to-end encryption. A published specification is not the same as a deployed client, carrier feature, enrolled subscriber, protected participant set, or protected message.

State model

LayerQuestionEvidence
SoftwareDoes this device version expose RCS?Device version and current Apple support
CarrierDoes the plan and region support RCS?Apple carrier list and carrier documentation
RecipientDoes every participant support the intended state?Conversation details and participant devices
ServiceIs this message using iMessage, RCS, SMS, or MMS?Composer label, message details, and current UI
ProtectionIs this conversation marked encrypted?Visible encrypted label and lock indicator
FallbackWhat happens when data or support is unavailable?Device settings, message state, and carrier behavior

Public-copy boundary

Green does not mean one protocol or one security state. On iPhone, both RCS and SMS or MMS can appear green. A protocol name does not prove encryption. A carrier listing does not prove the state of another participant. A past successful RCS message does not guarantee the next message will avoid fallback.

Every maintained answer needs a reviewed date. Encryption, carrier, business messaging, default app, registration, and fallback claims require same-day review before release.
