Understand what RCS changes on iPhone, which carrier and software conditions matter, why bubbles stay green, how fallback works, and how to verify encryption.

RCS gives supported iPhone conversations a richer carrier messaging layer when iMessage is not in use. It can improve media quality and add delivery receipts, read receipts, and typing indicators. What changes when RCS is active

Apple's current RCS support page says RCS can send text, high-resolution photos and videos, links, delivery receipts, read receipts, and typing indicators. It can use Wi-Fi or cellular data.

That closes part of the old experience gap between iPhone and non-Apple devices. A cross-platform conversation can exchange richer media and presence signals without moving the group to a separate app.

The exact feature set still depends on implementation and participants. A standard may define a capability that one carrier, device, app, account, or conversation has not deployed.

What an iPhone needs

Apple says basic RCS on iPhone requires iOS 18 and a cellular plan from a carrier that supports RCS. Availability varies by carrier and region.

The phone needs the RCS setting to appear and be enabled. The carrier must provision the service. The recipient must use a compatible service. Group conversations depend on all participants, not just the person troubleshooting.

Apple now says beta end-to-end encrypted RCS is available starting with iOS 26.5 in supported carrier configurations and is rolling out over time. Every participant's carrier must support the encrypted state.

What RCS does not solve

RCS does not merge iMessage and carrier messaging into one provider. It does not make every client identical. It does not erase carrier, region, metadata, spam, backup, identity, business-messaging, or fallback differences.

It also does not prove that a low-quality file originated from the sender's camera. Compression can occur during capture, export, application handling, transport, fallback, or recipient processing.

RCS improves the cross-platform default when the full configuration supports it. The right question is no longer whether the sender has an iPhone or Android. It is which service carried this message, under which conditions, with which visible protection state.
