ShareVR

ShareVR combined floor projection, a tracked handheld display, physical props, and a headset to create roles for both HMD and non-HMD participants. Its initial survey included 48 early adopters, and its comparative user study included 16 participants. The authors reported increased enjoyment, presence, and social interaction compared with a gamepad-and-television baseline. ShareVR paper

The sample is small and the prototype is not a general consumer-platform evaluation. The durable contribution is the idea of a participation gradient and meaningful asymmetric roles.

Bystander interruption

A 2020 study surveyed 100 people about interrupting a VR user and conducted a follow-up lab study with 16 participants. Relationship to the wearer influenced comfort and strategy. Participants often combined speech and touch. Bystander Interruption of VR Users

This supports an interruption and awareness requirement. It does not establish that every wearer is socially isolated.

Observer representation

A 2024 IEEE ISMAR study compared five representation conditions for HMD wearers and non-HMD observers. The authors report that observer representation benefited the shared experience, while wearers and observers differed in preferred representation. Open-access research record

This supports multiple representation choices rather than one universal avatar.
