A sourced profile of OpenAI's Sora 2 launch, video and audio capabilities, social product, likeness and provenance controls, evidence limits, and 2026 discontinuation.

Sora 2

Sora 2 was OpenAI's video-and-audio generation model and the basis of a standalone social creation product launched on September 30, 2025. OpenAI's official pages now state that the Sora product became unavailable on April 26, 2026.

This is a historical profile. It should not be used as a current access or purchasing guide.

Launch-era capability

OpenAI's launch page described improved physical accuracy, realism, steerability, synchronized dialogue, and sound effects. It placed the model inside an app built around creation, remixing, a feed, and likeness characters.

The Sora 2 System Card described more accurate physics and a step toward models that simulate physical-world complexity more accurately. It did not document a separate built-in physics-engine module.

Identity and provenance

OpenAI's launch-era safety record described consent-based likeness characters, visible watermarks, C2PA metadata, and internal tracing tools. A later safety update described visible and invisible provenance signals and restrictions around real-person image-to-video.

The Deployment Safety Hub reported safety evaluations and stated that harmful behavior or policy violations could still bypass mitigations. The controls should be described as designed safeguards rather than guarantees.

Episode 88 context

Dalton Anderson compared Sora 2 with Google's Veo in Episode 88. He focused on physical plausibility, audio, narrative consistency, social distribution, likeness, memes, and copyright risk.

The episode's statement that Sora 2 contained a built-in physics engine is corrected in derived work. Dalton's product-strategy observation remains useful: Sora 2 bundled generation with identity, remixing, and distribution rather than presenting only a production tool.

The full E088 episode video and six themed clips were recovered. The original prompts, settings, model identifiers, and raw generations were not. No current ranking should be inferred.

What the product choice revealed

Sora 2 was notable because OpenAI treated video generation as one part of a participation loop. A person could create, appear through an authorized likeness, remix another work, and encounter new work in the same product. That design made identity and distribution product requirements, not secondary export features.

The approach also created a larger trust surface. A social feed can amplify a convincing result faster than a private editing workflow. Likeness controls, provenance, moderation, reporting, and recommendation design therefore affected the product's meaning as much as visual quality did. This does not prove the loop was durable or commercially successful. It explains why a comparison based only on isolated clips misses a substantial part of the launch-era product.

Evidence boundary

OpenAI sources establish what the company claimed, how it described launch controls, and the later unavailability notice. They do not establish a hidden architecture, universal safety, legal permission for every generation, or production quality under another team's workflow.
