Starship Flight 5 Mission Record
SpaceX's fifth Starship flight test lifted off on October 13, 2024.
SpaceX's official chronology reports liftoff, ascent, hot-stage separation, Super Heavy boostback, coast, landing burn, and the first tower catch of the booster. It also reports Starship ascent, coast, controlled reentry through peak heating and maximum aerodynamic pressure, flip, landing burn, and splashdown in the target area of the Indian Ocean.
SpaceX states that thousands of vehicle and pad criteria had to be satisfied before the catch attempt. Public sources do not disclose the full proprietary criteria, control laws, tolerances, structural margins, or telemetry.
The FAA's October 2024 written re-evaluation addressed environmental analysis for the updated Flight 5 profile. The FAA concluded that the existing analysis remained substantially valid for the proposed license modification. Regulatory authorization is not an engineering guarantee or endorsement of every company conclusion.
Evidence boundary
Flight 5 demonstrated that the test articles completed the reported sequence under those conditions. It did not by itself prove rapid refurbishment, repeated catch reliability, crew safety, operational launch cadence, manufacturing rate, mission economics, orbital refueling, lunar landing, or Mars transport.
Later flights can establish repetition, variation, anomaly response, and design change. They belong in dated updates rather than the October 2024 chronology.
The mission page should use “SpaceX reports” where the company interprets success or significance and “FAA authorized” only within the actual licensing and environmental scope.
