Startup Idea Generation and Testing Research Note
Jared Friedman's original Y Combinator talk controls the seven idea-generation routes. E102 correctly attributes the framework to Startup School after referring to it imprecisely in the recording.
The routes begin with team advantage, a personally experienced problem, a wished-for product, a recent change, a variant of a successful company, conversations with people about problems, and a large broken industry.
Venture Step adds a common evidence pass. The founder writes the user, job, current alternative, frequency, urgency, consequence, buyer, decision path, economics, advantage, dependency, and evidence that would disconfirm the idea.
Problem interviews should examine recent behavior and actual workflow. Hypothetical enthusiasm is weaker than time, access, a pilot commitment, a signed agreement, or payment.
Founder-market fit can include knowledge, trust, access, technical ability, operating experience, or a sustained relationship with the problem. Prior employment or personal interest alone does not establish it.
Kill criteria protect the search from becoming a story that explains away every weak signal. A team can stop when the problem is infrequent, the buyer is absent, the data cannot be used, switching cost exceeds value, the sales cycle breaks the economics, or the alternative is good enough.
The framework can be used inside a company if data, security, legal, and operating authority are respected.
