Steady Hum System Specification
Definition
“Steady hum” is Dalton’s metaphor for small, repeatable output without depending on dramatic inspiration. It is not a validated clinical or productivity construct.
Required fields
The specification records a chosen goal, reason, cue, smallest meaningful action, evidence mark, normal recovery rule, review cadence, warning thresholds, stop conditions, and support route.
Implementation-intention research supports linking anticipated situations with planned responses. It does not guarantee success or replace the underlying goal.
The evidence record should remain light enough that tracking does not replace the practice. Streak length is not sufficient because it can hide cost, declining quality, or loss of value.
Recovery and review
An ordinary miss returns through the next safe cue or a smaller action. Repeated friction triggers redesign rather than automatic intensity.
Review asks whether the goal remains chosen, the action contributes, the cost is acceptable, and the boundary still protects health, safety, money, work, law, and relationships.
Exclusion
The system is not treatment, a performance guarantee, or permission to ignore a professional or emergency warning.
