Media verification should separate origin, integrity, manipulation, and truth. A file can be authentic to a camera and depict a staged event. A generated image can be accurately labeled. A real image can be attached to a false caption.
NIST AI 100-4 separates provenance data tracking from synthetic-content detection. Provenance includes metadata and watermarking that record origin or history. Detection classifies whether content appears synthetic from a signal or learned features.
C2PA Content Credentials cryptographically bind signed assertions to an asset. Credentials can record creation, edits, ingredients, software, and a signer. Metadata can be removed, provenance can be incomplete, and a valid credential does not prove the event is factual.
SynthID applies to supported Google AI systems. Current Google DeepMind documentation says watermarks can cover images, video, audio, and text. It says image and video signals are designed to withstand cropping, filters, frame-rate changes, and lossy compression. A negative SynthID result does not exclude another generator.
Visual artifacts and generic detector scores are leads, not verdicts. Models, edits, compression, and content categories can fall outside the detector's evaluation set.
The public verification sequence begins with the earliest credible source, preserves the file and context, inspects credentials and metadata, checks supported watermarks, searches for earlier versions, corroborates the claimed event, and reports uncertainty.
High-stakes media should be escalated to a qualified newsroom, forensic lab, platform, or authority. The article should not invite readers to accuse a private person based on a consumer tool.
