Research Note: What Zero-Click Search Actually Measures

Question

What can a zero-click percentage establish about search behavior, and what remains unknown when no recorded click follows a query?

What the sources establish

The 2024 SparkToro and Datos study classified 58.5 percent of measured United States Google searches and 59.7 percent of measured European Union searches as zero-click. Its taxonomy separated sessions that ended from sessions followed by another Google search. It also separated clicks to the open web from clicks to Google properties and paid results. The study used Datos clickstream panels, and its author expressly warned that panel composition complicates comparisons with earlier studies.

The June 2026 SparkToro and Similarweb study reported that 68.01 percent of measured United States Google searches from January through April 2026 ended without a click. It used a different provider, panel, period, mobile-session rule, and paid-click estimate. The author called the historical comparison imperfect because the 2019, 2024, and 2026 studies used different panels and devices.

These studies establish observed outcomes within their defined panels. They do not observe a person's satisfaction, memory, later direct visit, offline action, brand recognition, or purchase unless the panel and study design capture that event.

Google's current AI-features guidance says AI Overviews and AI Mode can present grounded responses with supporting links. It also says ordinary Search eligibility and SEO practices apply, with no special AI markup required. Google announced dedicated generative-AI visibility reports for a subset of Search Console properties in June 2026. Those reports expose impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates. They do not turn an impression into proof of influence, satisfaction, or business value.

Disagreement and uncertainty

"Zero-click" is not a universal event definition. A study may count no navigation after a query, no click to any destination, or no click to the open web. Some taxonomies place a reformulated query inside zero-click behavior. Others focus on sessions that end on the results page. Mobile and desktop collection can differ, as can the inactivity rule that decides when one session ends.

The 2024 and 2026 percentages should not be joined into a precise trend line. They are useful dated observations with different methods. The 2026 source itself makes that limitation explicit.

No-click behavior can mean an answer was sufficient, the result was poor, the user refined the query, the user acted inside a platform, or the user abandoned the task. The clickstream result alone does not distinguish those explanations.

Editorial use

The public explainer should define the denominator before quoting a percentage. It should separate five outcomes: no recorded click, another search, a platform-owned destination, an open-web visit, and an outcome that occurs later or elsewhere.

The durable Venture Step position is that traffic, citation, answer use, and business outcome are different measures. A publisher should not call a zero-click session a success or failure without evidence about the intended reader action.
