Venture Step E083: Meta Connect 2025, Failed Demos, and the Next Computing Surface
Meta Connect 2025 left me with two reactions that should not fit together as neatly as they do. Some of the live demonstrations failed. The product direction still felt alive.
That tension became the center of Venture Step E083. I was not interested in narrating every slide from a keynote that ran for more than an hour. I wanted to know what the mistakes revealed, which interfaces felt genuinely new, and whether any of it would become part of ordinary life.
The episode's strongest ideas were the failed proof, the wrist-based control system, the move from casual camera glasses toward sports capture, and the stubborn fact that spatial computing can be immersive for one person while making everyone nearby a spectator.

During the keynote, live AI did not complete a planned interaction. A later call flow involving the display glasses and wristband also failed to connect as intended. Meta moved through the moments on stage rather than replacing them with a perfectly edited sequence.

The wristband was the part that felt unfamiliar
Meta Ray-Ban Display added a small visual layer to familiar-looking glasses. The more unusual interface sat on the wrist.
Meta Neural Band uses surface electromyography to detect electrical patterns associated with muscle activity. Software decodes those patterns into gestures that can control the glasses. The distinction between research and product matters. The paper demonstrates a method under defined conditions. The product page describes intended consumer features. Oakley Meta Vanguard moved into action-camera territory
The sports glasses created the episode's clearest competitive argument.
Meta positioned Oakley Meta Vanguard for running, cycling, skiing, and other active use. The centered camera, 122-degree lens, 3K capture, activity integrations, and automatic highlight triggers overlap with jobs that GoPro, Insta360, and DJI have spent years serving. My immediate thought was that action-camera companies should be worried. Glasses do not need a chest mount, selfie stick, or camera bag. They record roughly where the wearer looks, and the software can connect footage to activity data.
The claim becomes weaker when it jumps from convenience to replacement. Glasses and action cameras have different physical budgets. A dedicated camera can offer more deliberate framing, mounts, sealing, replaceable power, higher capture modes, and production control. No controlled field test accompanied E083.

Quest made the social gap visible
I have enjoyed the feeling of watching a movie on a massive virtual screen. That experience showed me the value of a headset and the limit at the same time.
The wearer can feel present in a theater. Friends in the room cannot naturally see the same theater, understand the same spatial context, or participate with the same controls. Casting the view to a television helps, but it can lag or disconnect, and it still places one person inside the experience while everyone else watches a feed.
Meta used Connect 2025 to introduce Horizon TV, more capable Horizon creation tools, higher world concurrency, and room capture for Quest 3 and 3S. Those additions can improve content, scale, and visual realism. They do not automatically solve co-located participation.

The computing surface is splitting
Connect 2025 did not reveal one device that replaces everything. It showed a stack.
Camera glasses capture the world and carry an assistant. Display glasses add a private visual output. A wristband supplies subtle input. Quest provides deeper immersion. Horizon supplies places, tools, and entertainment around those devices.
That stack is more interesting than a specification race because each layer changes behavior. A camera on the face changes which moments get recorded. A display changes when a phone needs to come out. A wrist interface changes how discreetly a person can act. A headset changes who receives the world and who remains outside it.
E083 was recorded as an opinionated reaction, with ads, buffering, failed screen sharing, jokes, and a one-take structure left visible. The public episode URL, audio, video, publication date, and reusable clips have not been verified in the recovered package. The article is complete as editorial copy, but publication and media reuse remain on hold until those assets are reconciled.
If the episode has one durable question, it is not whether Meta looked polished. It is whether the company exposed enough of the real interface to show where computing may move next, including the places where the product still breaks or leaves people out.
