Ten Year Problem Research Note

Question

How can Ellwood's ten-year-problem criterion, the good-quest argument, customer development, and entrepreneurship research become a useful founder decision without pretending to predict success?

Source ideas

In episode 99, Ellwood says his next founder problem had to hold his attention for ten years. He also uses the “painkiller versus multivitamin” analogy to test whether users experience enough urgency to interrupt their current behavior.

The Founders Fund essay “Choose Good Quests” argues that capable people should pursue consequential work and should consider their own “player card” of resources, skills, and constraints. It is a normative essay, not an empirical model.

Steve Blank's customer-development guidance treats early startup beliefs as hypotheses and warns against asking customers to design a feature list. The relevant evidence is recent behavior, current workarounds, problem intensity, and response to a minimum solution.

The NBER paper “Age and High-Growth Entrepreneurship” found that prior experience in the specific industry was associated with higher rates of upper-tail startup growth in the population studied. The result supports examining domain experience but does not predict an individual company's outcome.

Venture Step framework

The public framework should combine consequence, behavioral demand, founder knowledge and access, structural timing, economics, distribution, ethics, personal life fit, and explicit kill criteria.

The ten-year question tests willingness. Customer discovery tests problem and response hypotheses. Domain experience can improve access and understanding while creating bias. Economics tests whether user and payer value can support delivery. Ethics tests whether the product's successful operation creates unacceptable harm.

Limits

Do not call the painkiller metaphor a validated selection rule. Preventive products, infrastructure, and long-horizon services can be valuable without urgent felt pain.

Do not use prior experience as a guarantee. Do not use founder commitment as market evidence. Do not treat a “good quest” label as proof that a specific solution or business model is ethical.

The framework should end in a dated commitment memo, falsifiable next test, and predeclared reasons to stop.
