What the sources establish
NIST Technical Note 1297 supports describing a result as defined by a particular method and considering repeatability, reproducibility, and implementation. This establishes a general boundary between performance under a protocol and performance in every real setting.
NapLab's current methodology separates measured sinkage and bounce from its total score because the company treats preferred levels as personal. It describes pressure relief as a structured subjective assessment informed by pressure mapping and other observations. This is a first-party methodological example, not clinical evidence.
The 2019 biomechanical review examined research on mattress design, pressure distribution, alignment, body build, posture, and customization. It concluded that proposed target values for desirable alignment and pressure distribution lacked sufficient evidence and described substantial method variation.
The 2025 firmness and sleep study compared three firmness conditions in 12 participants with moderate body mass index. Some outcomes favored the medium condition, but the population and design are too narrow for a universal buyer rule.
The interface-pressure study found differences in sleep measures under specific pressure-distribution conditions. It supports the relevance of product-user interaction under an experimental method, not a direct prediction from a commercial pressure map to one consumer's long-term outcome.
Disagreement and uncertainty
The studies vary in sample, design, firmness definitions, outcome, duration, posture, and population. Comfort, sleep architecture, pain, pressure distribution, alignment, and durability are not interchangeable outcomes.
The public explainer must not say that medium-firm is best for everyone, recommend a mattress for pain, diagnose a condition, or imply that a product test predicts sleep treatment outcomes.
Manufacturer return and trial policies are dynamic and contract-specific. The explainer should tell readers to verify the exact seller, model, date, fees, condition requirements, and action deadline rather than reproduce a generic period.
Editorial use
Define performance as an observation under stated conditions and personal fit as the relationship among product, person, task, environment, budget, tolerance, and preference.
Use controlled evidence to narrow candidates. Use prewritten thresholds and a planned real-use trial to decide acceptance. Keep the final advice proportional and non-medical.
