Vertical Development Research Note

Vertical development is an umbrella for theories about changes in how adults make meaning, coordinate perspectives, and handle complexity. Horizontal development usually describes additional knowledge, skills, and practiced behavior within a current frame.

Relevant traditions include constructive-developmental theory, ego development, action logics, hierarchical complexity, dynamic skill, and integrative complexity. They overlap but do not form one interchangeable scale.

McCauley and colleagues' Leadership Quarterly review examined constructive-developmental theory in leadership and identified both applications and research needs.

Readiness Engine's current methodology cites Kegan, Cook-Greuter, Loevinger, Torbert, Rooke, Commons, Fischer, Suedfeld, and Tetlock. It says the proprietary instrument includes the interview, questions, scoring anchors, calibration, and reports.

Evidence for a theory does not validate a proprietary transcript-analysis method. The construct record and instrument record must remain separate.

Key confounds include language fluency, culture, disability, education, professional storytelling, topic knowledge, trust, interview conditions, rater interpretation, and model version.

The construct should not be used as a universal ranking of intelligence, maturity, leadership worth, or human value. Role requirements, context, practical action, and actual work evidence remain necessary.
