Current public method
The UK House of Commons Library's May 5, 2026 briefing offers a current, public, evidence-aware sequence. It begins with the source and original version, then uses reverse image search, metadata, visual clues, location, time, corroboration, and uncertainty. It explicitly notes that uncertainty can remain and that knowledge can be revised.

AFP's professional guide explains how to extract useful keyframes from a video and use reverse image search to locate earlier uploads or different context. It is a technique, not a truth engine.

Google News Initiative's verification training explains how reverse image search can find earlier uses and source history. Because Google operates the tool, the page is best used for workflow mechanics rather than an independent claim about effectiveness.
Evidence order
A defensible verification record should preserve the URL, uploader, capture time, download time, original file if lawfully available, and the exact claim being tested.
It should then seek the earliest available source, reconstruct date and location, inspect edits and provenance, seek independent records of the event, and use content-based detectors as limited signals.
The order matters. A technically authentic recording can be posted with a false date or location. A synthetic clip can depict a fictional scene whose disclosure is accurate. A detector score does not establish the surrounding claim.
Safety and privacy
Do not download, duplicate, or redistribute illegal, exploitative, intimate, graphic, or dangerous media merely to complete a checklist. Preserve only what is lawful and necessary. Use platform reporting, specialist investigators, counsel, or emergency services when the content or claim creates a serious safety or legal concern.
Publication boundary
The public guide is for an ordinary share decision. It is not a forensic protocol, evidentiary opinion, chain-of-custody procedure, or substitute for a newsroom, investigator, court, platform, or qualified expert.
The worked method should end in supported, refuted, or unresolved. It should not force a binary result.
