Open Source AI Artifact and License Record
Current reference definition
The Open Source AI Definition 1.0 was announced by the Open Source Initiative on October 28, 2024. It requires freedom to use, study, modify, and share an AI system for any purpose. It also describes data information, code, and parameters as parts of the preferred form for modification.
This is a concrete standard for accurate writing. It is not a substitute for reading the terms attached to a specific artifact, and it does not erase ongoing disagreement over AI openness.
Artifact test
| Layer | Controlling question |
|---|---|
| Paper | Can the method and evaluation be inspected? |
| Code | Can the relevant source be used, changed, and redistributed under its license? |
| Weights | Can the parameters be downloaded and used for the intended purpose? |
| Data information | Is there enough provenance and processing information to understand how the model was derived? |
| Dataset | Can the actual data be accessed and reused under stated terms? |
| Service | Is there a hosted interface, and what do its terms permit? |
| Maintenance | Is the artifact active, archived, supported, or abandoned? |
E044 examples
Spirit LM exposes research artifacts but places the covered materials under the FAIR Noncommercial Research License. Because commercial use and other uses are restricted, the release should not be labeled open source without qualification under the OSI definition.
Sparsh exposes code and checkpoints, but its repository license is CC BY-NC 4.0 and the repository is now archived. Its public visibility does not remove the noncommercial restriction or establish current support.
Movie Gen published research and selected examples. The reviewed 2024 record did not provide an unrestricted public model release.
The accurate vocabulary is specific: public paper, source-available code, downloadable weights, research license, noncommercial artifact, limited pilot, hosted product, or archived repository.
